The Beginning of the Movement

Social Welfare Movement was founded by A.S. Sankarapandian.

The movement was formally inaugurated on 30 April 1988 at Aralvaimozhi in Kanyakumari district. Its public service activities, however, had already begun in 1986, when its organisational structure also started taking shape.

Principles

  1. Promote self-development, economic self-reliance and active participation in society.
  2. Work towards an equal and humane society without discrimination based on caste, religion, race, language or other differences.
  3. Create awareness so that people from every section of society can benefit from government welfare schemes, bring public needs and grievances to the attention of elected representatives and officials, and work towards effective resolution.
  4. Work for the advancement of disadvantaged and vulnerable people, including women, persons with disabilities, destitute persons and senior citizens.
  5. Build awareness against social evils including alcohol abuse and corruption, and work to remove obstacles that hinder social progress.
  6. Protect the environment and help build a society that lives in harmony with nature.
  1. Undertake initiatives for the development of students, youth and women.
  2. Encourage and promote art, literature, education, culture and sports.
  3. Develop and implement programmes for the advancement of farmers and manual workers.
  4. Create awareness about natural medicine, public health and the law, and work towards solutions in matters affecting consumers and human rights.
  5. Help develop patriotism, a spirit of sacrifice, self-discipline, self-confidence and responsibility, while working for world peace and unity among people.
  6. Promote an alternative model of development centred on people and nature, and pursue people-oriented public development through alternative political engagement to bring about social change.
